ROCKALL:

“The most isolated speck of rock, surrounded by water, on the surface of the Earth.” James A. MacIntosh (1946)

"There can be no place more desolate, despairing and awful." Lord Kennet (1971)

Rockall 2011 is an expedition to be undertaken by Nick Hancock in order to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes. Since the first recorded landing, only four people have spent more than one night on Rockall; of these only one has done it without shelter.

The challenge is for Nick to land on Rockall and survive solo for 60 days on this isolated rock thereby setting two new records:

1. The longest occupation of Rockall in history;

2. The longest ever solo occupation of Rockall.

It is proposed that his landing will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the first recorded landing on Rockall, by the Royal Navy in 1811.

Ancillary to this, Nick will be undertaking scientific research and study to continue the geographical, geological, ornithological, entomological, and botanical work that has been carried out to date, particularly that of James Fisher in 1955.

He will be carrying out a study of modern bird, insect and plant life, collecting new rock samples and completing a GNSS survey. Furthermore, Nick hopes to keep a continuous record of wind speed, air temperature and pressure during his period of occupation thereby providing as full a picture of the micro-environment of this rocky outcrop as possible and updating the pre-existing data. More information regarding the Science and Research to be undertaken on the expedition can be found by clicking here.
